How Many Grams of Prostate Is Surgery Necessary?

The required size of the prostate gland in an adult male is between 18-25 cc. This measurement is usually made by ultrasonography. Prostate enlargement is diagnosed in patients larger than this measurement. However, not every patient with prostate enlargement needs treatment. Because half of the patients do not cause any complaints. If there is no malignant growth (prostate cancer) as a result of the scans performed in this patient group, it will not need to be treated with medication or surgery.

The size of the prostate has no determinant for surgery. If the patient is unable to urinate easily despite lifestyle changes and drug treatments, recurrent urinary tract infections, bleeding in the urine, stone formation in the bladder, kidney failure, recurrent urinary catheterization, or the patient prefers an operation instead of using medication, the size of the prostate will make sense at this stage.

Depending on the amount of prostate size, the type of surgical treatment to be offered to the patient will vary. Generally, TUIP under 30 grams, monopolar or bipolar TUR-P in the range of 30-80 grams, and HOLEP over 80 grams, open prostatectomy or laparoscopic / robotic adenoma removal are performed. However, factors that vary from patient to patient may require different treatment options.
